Handling Sensitive Information
There’s a happy balance between performance and security.
Now that your team is working from home, your organization needs to analyze what risks are worthy of taking or what risks team members need to take to perform their duties.
With continuous education and training you can take the proper steps to remain secure. For example, conduct awareness training by sending out messages to your organization, reminding team members they are now in a different environment — the world has changed.
If you are regulated by HIPAA or another third party, you also need to make sure that your new solution is compliant.
Here is a quick checklist to make sure you’re doing your part to remain secure in your new remote work environment:
- Use different passwords on all of your applications and devices. Make sure they are long and unique by mixing capital letters, symbols and numbers.
- Create a password-protected pdf when sending files that contain sensitive information. Send the password in a separate email or text the person if possible. This will minimize the risk of a compromised system that allows hackers to open your sent encrypted documents.
- Never send passwords via email. If it is necessary, make sure the password is encrypted.
- Secure your home network by turning on your router’s WPA2 or WPA3 security.
- Dispose of sensitive information securely by using a shredder. Don’t just throw papers in the recycling bin.
- Do not leave your laptop unattended.
